Honestly, what are the chances? I spent my entire life searching for my bride when most boys wanted one night stands. Lived in the building next to hers, probably passed her a thousand times, even went into her coffee shop, asked to have my paintings sold there, and never saw her until I happened to turn on the news one night after a long day.

What are the chances?

And to spend my entire life trying to avoid the man I hoped would never come back unless the police found a remnant of his dead body from years ago, proving that he didn't leave me intentionally, only to have him knock on my car window to ask for directions?

Ella didn't believe in chances anymore. Since we met. She said she spent her entire life dreaming of the day "chances" would bring us together again, only to find out that every choice, whether it brought disaster or beauty, led her to the place she was meant to be. "The secret," she said. "Is waiting. Being patient and content where you are and hoping for what is yet to come."

So, maybe that explains why I pulled out of the parking lot and left him standing there, arms at his sides, squinting under his baseball hat, alone.

Maybe I didn't want to admit that perhaps that man, Harold Kessler, my long lost selfish father, came back into my life the same way Ella did. Not by chance. But because he was meant to.

That's the last thing I wanted to believe. The absolute last.

When we got to the pool Ella hung up with Tylissa and pulled my chin toward her. "I know who that was."

"How?"

"I heard him. I saw him. Gavin, you look just like him."

"I don't think so."

"Let's go back."

"No."

"Let's go back now, Gavin. I'm not kidding. He didn't look mean. If he had some kind of vendetta against you he would have followed us."

"I don't think he is trying to beat me up, Ella.” I laughed. “I think he's trying to ask for forgiveness."

"What's so hard about that?"

"A person can't give something they don't have."

"Then don't give it to him, but at least see what he has to say. Tell him you can't forgive him. Be honest. You are his son. He's alive. There's a such thing as second chances."

"Oh yeah? What about Heidi and Patrick? Do you only believe in second chances when it's convenient for you?"

"Don't." She reached for my hand. "Don't do this to us. Our relationship deserves better. Don't let some anger and pain from your past build a wall between us."

"I can't see him."

She pulled the car handle. "Let's go find the next note. See what Pop has to say. You know I don't believe in chances anymore. Maybe this next note will tell you to turn back and face him."

I got out of the car. She knew me too well, better than I wanted to know myself. People thought of me as joyful, peaceful, optimistic, fun. Only Ella knew that I struggled just as much as the next person.
